Dove on Fire

Subject matter: Dove

Elements of Design:
Line:
This picture is made up of many moving points which makes up lines. However, the lines do not stand alone. They are combined with other lines to make patterns and textures. As you can see, the picture above is made up of straight lines and curvy lines. The horizontal line in the "Dove on Fire" artwork gives out a feeling of rest and quietness. When you are looking at those lines, it would more likely not give you stress but makes you feel at ease.

Direction:
The "Dove on Fire" artwork is mostly made up of diagonal lines because it gives out a feeling of movement and direction. The reasons for the vivid diagonal lines is to create depth in this two dimensional composition. I was very much interested in creating an illusion of perspective that pulls everyone who is viewing it into the picture-creating and illusion of a space that one could move within it. When you look at this picture, you get a feeling that there is some activity going on there which causes your eyes to move around searching for it. It is said that vertical lines usually communicate feelings of loftiness and spirituality. I did not want this element in this particular picture. Therefore, I just used one vertical line to give the whole picture its balance.

Shape:
Original shape of the objects. Geometrical. Triangles. The geometric shapes on the foreground are actually made to connect with the back ground. It increases the decorative effect and keeps the viewer interested in the picture.

Size/ Scale:
Proportional.. The flames which are nearer (at the bottom) appear larger a little and more compared to the fire at the back (at the upper part of the picture). Thus, the viewer can see the importance of the fire in this picture.

Colour:
Red, Blue, Black, White, Orange. Bright colours to give out happy inviting feeling. However, it is combined with dark colours too in order to give the picture its balance. For example, the dove alone is made up of two colour (black and white). This is to indicate that everything is this world has two sides to it. It is up to us to choose to see which side. Another meaning to the two different colours of the dove, is that there are various different kind of people in this world. Thus, we should not just look at the outside (their appearances) but get to know them for who they are. Besides this, I have created a mixture of light and dark to indicate the flow and movement of the picture.

Texture:
Smooth (colour pencils). However, there is a little roughness to it because I applied an external medium to the paper and the colours are not the paper itself.

Value:
It has a mixture of light and dark colours. I created this to give out both a dark and mysterious plus a light and airy mood. That way the emotional aspect of the viewer is stable. Also, it portrays an Arial Perspective as the values are high in contract which moves the shapes and lines in this picture forward.
